Wet rock questions

Zion National Park says desert sandstone is heavily weakened when wet and that it often takes two or more days for the rock to be dry enough to climb. On wet sandstone, Zion adds, critical holds are more likely to break, altering routes for every climber after you, and protection is less likely to hold. For crags inside an area whose land manager publishes its own guidance, the tool shows that guidance and counts the hours against it.

Zion National Park, Capitol Reef National Park, Bears Ears National Monument, Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, Garden of the Gods Park, Red Rock Canyon Open Space and Castle Rock State Park. Each one is quoted from the land manager's own page and linked. Everywhere else the tool shows the rain record, and if you say the rock is sandstone, Zion's guidance for desert sandstone, labelled as Zion's.

From the Open-Meteo weather model: hourly rain for the last 7 days and the next 2, for the area around the crag (about 10 km across). It is a model estimate, not a rain gauge at the wall, so a passing storm can miss the crag or hit it harder than the model shows.

No. It tells you how long since it rained, how much fell and when the next rain is forecast, and compares that with published guidance. Shade, seeping cracks and wind all change how fast rock dries, so look at the rock and the ground before you climb.

Our crag records come from OpenBeta, which does not record the rock. The published waiting times are about sandstone, so the tool only shows one when the crag is in an area with its own guidance or you tell it the rock is sandstone. Your answer is remembered in this browser only.
