Lead climbing is the major skill jump. Instead of the rope being anchored above you, you clip it into protection as you ascend, which means longer falls and a belayer who must manage slack and catch dynamically. Indoor lead and lead-belay classes teach this; most gyms require a separate lead check.
Lead is the gateway to outdoor sport climbing, where you clip pre-placed bolts. It is where route-reading, clipping technique, and managing fear under real fall potential become central skills.
What you'll learn
- Clipping quickdraws cleanly and avoiding back-clipping/Z-clipping

Common questions
- What is the difference between sport and trad here?
- Sport lead clips fixed bolts; trad lead places your own removable protection. Most climbers learn sport lead first.
