Rock Climbing Progression: Gym to Alpine
Climbing has no single license, but it has a clear progression of skills, each typically learned from a gym, school, or certified guide. You move from supervised indoor climbing to leading your own routes, then outdoors, and if the mountains call, into trad, multi-pitch, and alpine terrain where the consequences and the skill demands climb together.
The rungs below describe what to learn at each stage and who teaches it. Grades (the numbers like 5.10a or V4) are explained in the final rung.
- 1Intro & Top-RopeYour first climbs, belayed from above, indoors or out.First session; comfort over a few weeks
